Almost every system in your Chevy depends on electricity, and this makes electrical problems a major issue. Electrical systems that fail can lead to the failure of additional systems and potential engine damage. As your Chevy dealer, we can identify and repair any of these problems. These are examples of some faults we can fix.
3 Electrical Problems You Should Always Fix at Your Chevy Dealer
Bad Spark Plugs
Spark plugs play a vital role in your engine as they ignite the fuel-air mixture in the cylinders. When the fuel and air are mixed correctly in the intake manifold, the resulting mixture is drawn into the cylinders. The cylinder closes, and the piston inside it rises at speed and compresses the mixture as it moves. At the high point of compression, the spark plug sparks and ignites the mixture to produce combustion.
Plugs need to be changed regularly, according to the schedule in your car manual, as the plugs slowly wear out. If a spark plug goes bad, it will spark intermittently or not at all, and this will cause a misfire in the cylinder. You’ll feel the effect of this as your Chevy will seem to lurch when it happens. We’ll test your plugs and replace any worn ones.
Blown Fuses
Every electrical system in your car has a fuse connected to it. They’re designed to absorb excessive current or electrical shorts and blow out. When the fuse blows, it cuts off the system it’s connected to. This protects the system from damage but also shuts it down until the fuse is replaced.
The first sign you’ll experience of a blown fuse is one or more systems refusing to work. The check battery light on your dash will also illuminate. We’ll connect your car’s computer to our diagnostic system to identify the blown fuse and then replace it. The affected systems will then work normally again.
Failing Alternator
The alternator is a mini electrical generator in your engine that produces all the electricity for your car. It spins at high speed, producing magnetic energy, which is converted into AC and finally, the DC that your car’s systems require. On average, an alternator will last for eight years before it starts to wear out.
As the alternator wears out, it produces less electricity. As the electricity supply drops, this impacts all your car’s systems. The computer has to intervene to shift the available electricity from system to system according to immediate demand. This can result in issues like the radio switching off or the moon roof jamming as power is withdrawn. We’ll test your alternator and replace it if necessary.
