When you think of Temecula, CA the first thing that pops in most peoples’ minds is the sprawling vineyards that are omnipresent in the region. With over 40 spectacular wineries to visit, it’s no wonder wine is the standout in the Temecula area. But there’s so much more to do in this great resort-town destination. Here are some great bike paths to consider when you’re in the area.
1. Santa Rosa Plateau Nature Education Foundation
Santa Rosa is a natural playground that features a vast array of trails to choose from. You’ll feel at peace in the quiet and serene setting as you venture out for an early morning hike or bike ride. The trails are various, and there are walking-only sections as well as bike, dog, and horse routes. One of the highlights is the Vernal Pool Trail. It’s essentially a small lake reached after a strenuous mile hike. Bring proper footwear because it can get pretty muddy.
2. Santa Margarita Preserve
A local favorite, and perhaps one of the best hiking spots in all of California, Santa Margarita is an excellent way to spend a day, pack a lunch, and enjoy all that nature has to offer. Most of the trails are kid-friendly if you have some young ones in tow. There are plenty of spots to relax near the creek with an abundance of shade provided by the plentiful trees. Your dog will love it, too, as it’s a pet-friendly preserve. There are horseback and bike trails available as well.
3. Vail Lake Resort
If you’re into camping, Vail Lake provides the perfect weekend retreat during those balmy summer months. There’s a 24-hour staff to help you get settled at your site. Most sites include a fire pit and picnic table so you can cook up a nice dinner and of course s’mores. There are many great biking and hiking trails to enjoy during the day, and once you’ve worked up a sweat you can come back and take a dip in the refreshing pool.
4. Lake Skinner
Lake Skinner is a peaceful respite in the heart of wine country. There is a small entry fee, but you’ll forget all about it when you take the kids to the splash pad after a long afternoon of hiking and biking. There’s plenty of wildlife to enjoy as you meander your way around the lake and work up an appetite. This is also where Temecula’s famous balloon festival takes place.
5. Coastal Rail Trail
This awe-inspiring trail will someday stretch 44 miles from San Diego to Oceanside. There are shorter parts that are already open for enjoyment for bikers of all skill levels and desires. Try the Solana Beach section that spans Ocean Street in the north to Via de la Valle in the south. There’s plenty to see along the way and you can even take a break on the beach or get a bite at one of the many restaurants.
When you get tired of pedaling, head down to Paradise Chevrolet Cadillac and pick out a new ride that will do the work for you.
